Tuesday Spotlight – Dorothy Wills-Raftery

Meet Dorothy, Im very excited to have her fill out the spotlight form! She is an amazing Dog Mom to a wonderful pack of Siberian Huskies, An author at ArticHouse Publishing and guest author for American Pet Magazine…and the list goes on! She does so much for animals including being a advocate for K9 Epilepsy. I honestly aspire to be like her! Rolo even has a copy of her book — LOOOK!!

*Your Name: Dorothy Wills-Raftery, a/k/a FiveSibesMom

*Where Are You From?:: The Hudson Valley, New York

*Animal(s) (Age, Name, Breed)?:: The FiveSibes are all Siberian Huskies. They are Harley, 8; Gibson, 7; Wolfgang, Chloe & Bandit, all 5.

*Interesting Facts About Your Animal(s)?:: They are all beautiful and charming and have their own unique personalities! Harley, our black & white, is our alpha queen…and she knows it! And although they all need her to howl first, she really can’t hold a note and once you hear her, you’ll know what I mean! But, she thinks she sings great and she howls (however warbly) loud and strong! Gibson is a wolf grey (he looks more grey & white) wooly Siberian Husky and he is an Epi-dog (canine epileptic) and he has been in love with Harley since the day he joined our family at four months old! Gibson is such a deep soul and the pack’s go-to guy to snuggle with when it’s cold outside! Bandit, Wolf & Chloe are littermates, and their older brother is Gibson. Wolf & Chloe are our pure whites, Wolf has longer fur, Chloe shorter, and they are our resident sleepyheads! Wolf loves toys…I mean l-o-v-e-s toys! He knows right where the toy bins are and loves to play with them all! When Wolf sings, he can hit some notes and styles that could rival Axl Rose of Guns ‘N Roses! Chloe talks (and yells if you don’t answer her) non-stop! Bandit is our other wolf grey and she is deaf, but it does not slow her down one bit! She is super fast, and flies…sometimes her paws seem to never touch the ground! We dub her the “flying monkey!” so prey watch out! She is a thief (steals everything and hides it in her “lair” – her bed! But give her a hug, and you are getting kissed to death for sure!

My Epi-Husky Gibson has inspired me to become an advocate of Canine Epilepsy Awareness and together we launched the “Live Gib Strong” K-9 Epilepsy Awareness Campaign to help educate and inform others that dogs can–and do–live happy, full lives with Canine Epilepsy. He is the subject of my illustrated children’s book, What’s Wrong With Gibson? Learning About K-9 Epilepsy written in the hopes of helping children not be afraid if their own dog should have a seizure, and it even gives some helpful easy tips that a child could to help their dog. In addition to awareness and education about seizure disorders, we also coordinate fundraising events to benefit non-profit Canine Epilepsy funds and organizations such as Canine Epilepsy Resources and The Wally Foundation, so they in turn can help other Epi-dogs and their families.

*Animal(s) Favorite Treat?:: Hands down House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits “Gibbie Snacks,” named after my Gibson!

*Animal(s) Favorite Trick?:: Howling and Talking both spontaneously and if asked; Gibson says “I love you!”

*Perspective On Adopting A Rescue?:: There are so many Huskies in rescues as a result of people just getting one because they are beautiful and do not do their homework on the needs and traits of the breed. Then, when they run, escape, chase small prey, howl, or chew up things, they quickly drop them off at a shelter/rescue. I truly believe people who think they want a Siberian Husky should check with a rescue first. There are so many beautiful Huskies there just waiting for a forever home and a loving family. I would recommend fostering one first to see if a Husky fits their lifestyle. Fostering not only gives the Husky a place to call home, but it also forges a wonderful bond between perspective Husky parent and the Husky. Some of the Sibes have been saved from euthanasia by rescues and truly deserve a forever family and home.

*Favorite Quote?:: “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” ~Immanuel Kant

*Comments;:: I love my fur”kids” with all my heart!

Thank you so much, Kimberely! I am so honored to be featured along with my FiveSibes in your wonderful “Confessions” blog! You also are a wonderful advocate for Canine Epilepsy Awareness with Rolo not only being an Epi-dog, but also a Pet Therapy Dog, proving once again how Canine Epilepsy does not stop our furbabies from living life. Your kind intro words moved me to tears! I’m so happy to have met you…and we have Gibson and Rolo to thank for that!
