At Dreams Aloud Promotions, my goal is to help bring every client’s dreams to life and link them to the world. *Who is filling out this interview?
Carol M. Upton lives and writes at Skookumshack, a 50-year-old Gibsons cabin. Over 100 of her animal-related articles and book reviews have appeared in numerous newspapers, magazines, and anthologies, including the Vancouver Sun, Coast Reporter, Cup of Comfort series, Horses All, True Cowgirl, Horse Owner Today, Just Business, and the newest book by Marta Williams, My Animal, My Self. She is a regular contributor to the Equine Enterprise column at Horse Owner Today, writes features for Citizen Pet, and writes book reviews for Small Farm Canada.
Carol’s memberships include the Coast Cultural Alliance, Women in the Horse Industry, Petwriters, and the Federation of B.C. Writers. Her community involvement has been with the Festival of the Written Arts, Showcase of the Performing Arts, Mystique Andalusians, and the S.P.C.A. She is currently studying Animal Communication and Tellington Touch.
When not in front of her computer, Carol can be found playing with horses, bird watching, or following her dogs along the beach.
*What is your position with Dreams Aloud Promotions?

*What type of animals do you have (name, age, breed etc.)
I currently have a 16-year-old Husky-Lab cross named Luna. A couple of years ago we also adopted a 3-year-old Shitzu-Pom cross named Lucy, thinking that Luna would enjoy the company. They make a great combination, as the “little sister” keeps Luna on the go. They watch out for one another, too. In the past I have had a horse and multiple cats, and to this day, enjoy the variety of wildlife who share our backyard.
*What was your inspiration for starting your company?
This is a business I love that was born out of my passion for making the creative life easier for others. As a lifelong writer and co-founder of the Sunshine Coast School of Writing, I saw the challenges many writers faced as they began to market their books or send freelance content out to various publications, and I felt like I could help. I learned how to market myself over a long period of time and with plenty of help along the way. I felt like I could put to good use my connections built up over many years of animal world and writing involvement, and pass on what I have learned to my clients.
*How was your company started?
I first started out by freelance writing for business magazines and helping people to write their memoirs, which sharpened my talent for journalistic interviewing. I am a lifelong animal lover and a student of animal communication. I wanted to combine my love for animals with my desire to help writers, so I soon switched my focus to specialize in animal-related authors, speakers and healing artists. Thus, Dreams Aloud Promotions was born.

I write marketing plans, link you to new review sources / media around the world or in your chosen specific region, coordinate events, pitch publicity opportunities, and so much more on a highly personalized basis using connections built up over many years of animal world involvement. We also edit and submit client articles for publication and, most recently, I have collaborated with Carol Aldridge of Equine Office Solutions ( www.equineofficesolutions.com )
to offer the industry’s premier source of eBook publication and promotion services.
*How does it benefit someone by using your services?
One of the things I hear consistently from animal-related business people is that they don’t have enough hours in the day. Once they start working with me, we are then co-creating book or business sales, and the client is then set free to dedicate their valuable time to doing what they love – running that business or writing that next book or article.
Clients also benefit from the connections I have in the animal-related writing and publishing world, connections which have been built up over many years of networking and of publishing my own writing. We don’t do mass mailings. The mass mailings, for which a client can pay thousands of dollars, frequently end up in trash bins across the country.
If your book is directed to the canine market, I will send proposals out that are specific to that market and to decision-makers with whom I am on a first-name basis. If your book is about pets in general, I have databases to suit that market. I have developed personal relationships with these folks, and they will almost always review your book, offer you an e-interview, or publish your article, book excerpt, or company profile based on their relationship with me.
*What is the cost of your services?
My most reasonable hourly rates are clearly stated on my website at http://www.dreamsaloud.ca. I am happy to work by the hour, for example in consultations or writing a press release, or to customize one of several marketing packages you will find in my Services Catalog. If a client wants to learn how to market themselves, I am more than willing to pass on the information they will need in order to do that. I also offer a discount to animal-related non-profit societies.
I offer a free, short email consultation and a one-page suggested marketing plan to every client before we agree to move ahead. I also offer much free publicity through my FB page at Dreams Aloud Animal Book Buzz and through my Twitter account, because I believe that we can all help each other if we work together with a generous spirit.
