Spotlight on Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues (SOAAR)

*Who is filling out this interview?
Larissa St. Arnaud

*What is the name of your organization?
Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues

*What is your position with them?

*Where are you based out of?
Edmonton & surrounding area

*What does your organization do?
Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues is a non-profit organization that is made up of a small group of volunteers who are committed to helping Alberta rescue organizations with funding, material and volunteer aid. We understand the challenges that rescues face daily with mounting vet bills and the need for constant fundraising and it is our hope to help alleviate some of this stress by offering as much support as we can to all Alberta animal rescues.

*What is your Mission?
Supporters of Alberta Animal Rescues (SOAAR) assists organizations with financial, fundraiser or volunteer aid.

*What is your vision?
To minimize the struggles of Alberta animal rescues due to the lack of financial, material and human resources.

*How long has your organization been around for?
We are very new! We’ve only been around since August 2013

sooar*If an Alberta Rescue or Shelter needed help what steps do they take to get help?
Right now, they simply just need to ask us either via Facebook, email or a quick phone call. Sometimes we see the need posted on Facebook and offer assistance. There may be an application process in the future. However, as long as a rescue coincides with our values, we will help if we are able to. Our values include a) providing necessary veterinary care in the form of inoculations, parasite control, and working to minimize animal overpopulation through the practice of spaying and neutering with exception to rare and unusual cases b) animals are placed in a caring environment where they are comfortable and rehabilitated with the goal of finding an equally caring and responsible adopter, however not before sterilization and c) if an animal under care is suffering due to injury or disablement and destined to have a poor quality of life, not have their life prolonged to garner sympathy and subsequently donations.

*If someone wanted to become a volunteer, how could they?
Contact us through Facebook or email and we will send the volunteer application! We need volunteers throughout Alberta so there is a lot of opportunity to be a very independent volunteer.

*What types of items do you take as donations?
Everything. All our donations get dispersed out to rescues depending on the need. We take everything from food to toys to blankets. We also take for all types of animals, not just dogs and cats. Since we support all Alberta rescues we also support bird, reptile, rabbit, horse and pig rescues and everything in between!

*Do you have any fundraisers coming up that you want my viewers to know about?
Of course! SOAAR is always on the go. On June 7th we have our first Dog Walk Run in which there will be a 5km walk and 10km run. Funds raised go directly back into supporting rescues. We have also just recently started gathering food for the Alberta Spay and Neuter Task Force’s clinic in May and are very excited to be working with them.

*What does your organization hope to achieve in 2014?
– increase awareness for who we are and what we do
gather a network of dependable volunteers throughout Alberta
– reach out to more rescues outside of the canine rescue realm
– increase the size of our monetary donations towards vet bills
