Tuesday Spotlight – Save Old Souls Sr. K9 Rescue Society

*Who is filling out this interview?

Trudy McKinnon

*What is your position for your Animal Rescue/Shelter?

*What is the name of your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
Save Old Souls Sr. K9 Rescue Society but everyone calls us SOS

*Where are you located?
Medicine Hat, Alberta

*Do you offer any awareness programs to your community?
We love to go to schools, youth groups, service and community groups to talk about dogs, their needs and care, rescue dogs etc. We will even grovel for money.

*How long has your Animal Rescue/Shelter been around for?
SOS was formed in 2000, and incorporated as a society in 2001

*What types of animals do you have at your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
We focus only on dogs, and then only seniors or unadoptable dogs. We work closely with the SPCA as well as other rescues. Many of our dogs come from individuals in the community as well.

*If someone wanted to become a volunteer, how could they?
Call or email!!

*What types of items do you take as donations?
Food, toys, crates and exercise pens, basically anything to do with dogs. We also accept cat supplies and distribute them through our Pet Food Bank.

*Do you have any fundraisers coming up that you want my viewers to know about?
Our major fundraiser is the Casino June 12 and 13. If someone would like to volunteer for a shift please email saveoldsouls@gmail.com. The Alberta government has cut the Community Spirit Program which was also a large portion of our funds. Donations can be mailed in as well. Tax receipts are issued for donations over $10.

WE have a garage sale coming up in June with the date TBA, and August 1 we are having a Rescue Dog Birthday Party and details will follow on that one.

*What is the adoption process like?
SOS has an application that is completed, and then we check references. If that goes well we visit the home and talk to the prospective adopters. Once we’re sure it’s a good match, the dog goes to his forever home. You can also apply to be preapproved, and then when you find your perfect pooch, there is no waiting! It doesn’t cost anything to apply, and our adoption fees are $150.

*What does your shelter/rescue hope to achieve in 2014?
We rehome an average of 30 dogs a year, and we would love to see this number grow. We want to continue to work on Board development, recruit new volunteers, and just spread the word about SOS.

*Anything else you want to add?
SOS operates the only Pet Food Bank in south eastern Alberta. We support approx. 100 cats and dogs per month. Our food comes from Walmart and other stores in town, for which we are very grateful. We would also like to thank the people, businesses, schools and service groups who donate and make SOS possible.
