Thursday Shelter Spotlight – The Lost Dogs Home

Melbourne, Australia

*Do you offer any awareness programs to your community?
We sure do, we have a number of programs tailored to school groups and social groups, as well as a free online resource known as the Pet Licence. Pet Licence is currently under redevelopment and will be a great online source of information about responsible pet ownership and looking after your dog or cat. We also have a weekly one hour radio show on Melbourne’s GLBTIQ radio station JOY 94.9 to chat about all things pet related from wet noses to wagging tails! (Podcasted online at

*How long has your Animal Rescue/Shelter been around for?
We were founded in 1911 and doors opened on the shelter in 1913, so over 100 years. We have a website devoted to the history of the Home at

*What types of animals do you have at your Animal Rescue/Shelter?
Mostly Dogs and Cats, with the occasional sheep, goat, pig, guinea pig, rabbit. We only adopt out dogs and cats, other animals will go to other rescues or shelters for rehoming.


*If someone wanted to become a volunteer, how could they?
We have volunteer programs for dog walking, admin, event staff, cat enrichment and all the details are on our website at

*What types of items do you take as donations?
We gratefully accept donations of blankets, towels, pet food, cat litter, pet toys, dog leads and veterinary/medical supplies.
