Here is an interview that I did with Jasmine from Green Bamboo Publishing all about their new book Watermelon Party! By purchasing this book it also donates a portion of its proceeds to Rocky Ridge Refuge! Reading & fundraising at the same time!

Keep on the lookout for a book review from us coming soon!

*What is the name of the book?
Watermelon Party

cover*Who is filling out this interview?
Jasmine Cabanaw

*What is your involvement with this book?
I am the author and the publisher.

*How was the book started and what was your inspiration?
I got the idea for the book after seeing a series of photos on the Rocky Ridge Refuge Facebook page. In the first few photos, there was half a watermelon with some puppies around it, and then in the next, a capybara had joined in. By the time the series was finished there were half a dozen puppies, a capybara, and a tortoise all hovered around this juicy watermelon. I just thought it was the perfect representation of friendship and sharing. There was so much harmony, even though the animals were of different species. It was a great example of a beautiful lesson and I thought it would make a perfect story for a children’s book. I expounded on it, in order to incorporate more animals, and added in rhyme, repetition, and action sounds so that the book could be a full learning experience.

I should also add that I really love the work being done at Rocky Ridge Refuge and wanted to utilize the book as a way to fundraise for the animals. A good portion of the proceeds from the books are donated to Rocky Ridge Refuge.

package-300x300*When was it released?
The soft cover was released in November 2014 and the hard cover was released in December 2014.

*What is the cost of the book?
The soft cover is $10 and the hard cover is $15, plus shipping. We also sell a sponsor package for $45 that includes a hard cover book, a print, a book mark, a post card, and 12 months of digital info-cards that are about each of the animals. Again, it’s a fundraiser, so it’s a great way to donate to a good cause while receiving something fun and educational in return.

*Where can someone get a copy of this book?
The best place to order the book is from the Green Bamboo website, since the majority of the proceeds will go to the rescue organization. The book is also available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc., but since they get the books at a discounted rate, there is not much money left over to give to Rocky Ridge Refuge. So, please, order through the website at

soft*What is the book about?
Watermelon Party is based on a real event that happened at Rocky Ridge Refuge. One July 4th, Janice put out a watermelon, and one by one the animals gathered around the watermelon, sharing in its juicy sweetness side by side, despite their differences in species and size. It is a story of friendship, love, animal rescue, and good, old summertime fun! There is also a bonus game of duck-duck-goose within the illustrations.

*How many pages is the book?

*What age group is the book targeted to?
1-5, but kids up to age 8 have been enjoying it.

This sounds like a great book! Janice Wolf is such a great person whose work is very important. As you say,the diversity within her refuge is a great lesson to the single species “human” who never seems to get along as one whereas these animals live in harmony.
