Pet Spotlight Interview- Dylan & Theo

spotlight interview
Today’s Pet Spotlight Interview is featuring two doggies from the UK; Dylan & Theo. Dylan went through an amazing rehabilitation and now loves life with his family & fur-brother Theo. Learn all about these two by reading their great interview below. Also be sure to follow their Facebook page: http://www/

*What is your name?
Jamie-lee Birch

*Where are you from?
Gloucestershire, UK

*What is your pet(s) (Age, Breed & Name)?
Theo – a working cocker spaniel that i have had since he was 8 weeks, he will be three in May.

Dylan – a two year old rescue lurcher saluki cross that we adopted in September.

*What are some interesting facts about your pet(s)?
Dylan won the PDSA pet survivor award this year and appeared on BBC breakfast. He survived an awful ordeal that many would not have pulled through and we could not be prouder of him.

To make it fair, an interesting fact about Theo is that despite not being an actual working dog we have trained him using ‘dummies’ and he came second in a gun dog trial competition in the summer, to the dismay of many professional farmers!

*What is your pet (s) favorite treat?
Pretty much anything! They sometimes have rice and egg in their kibble as a treat, which always goes down well. And Dylan loves carrots.

*What is your pet(s) favorite trick?
Theo is pretty good with tricks. He does the basics; sit, down, paw, stay etc. He also does a little routine whereby he is ‘shot’ and dodges out the way of the bullet.

When Dylan arrived with us he had no basic training so we have started from scratch with him. Whilst this is not impossible as you can always teach an old dog new tricks, it has proved much harder than training a puppy! He has mastered sit and paw, and is just starting to understand ‘down’ – although he is so gangly that getting all the way to the floor can prove to be a struggle!

*Where is your pet(s) favorite place to go?
There is a lovely hill walk that we do and we will often go with friends, it has a wash pool too which Theo absolutely adores regardless of the temperature!

*What is the funniest thing your pet has ever done?
Theo once stole a golf ball from a golfer doing a semi-professional tournament as he hit it. That was so embarrassing, but totally hilarious too. Dylan’s was more recent; we were at a local pet store and whilst paying he did the biggest poop ever on the floor. I was mortified. Then, as the lady was cleaning it up, he did a wee right next to her. I couldn’t look the cashier in the face, I wanted to ground to swallow us up. Again, so embarrassing but totally hilarious.

*Perspective on Adopting a Rescue?
We had Theo from a registered breeder as we were not fully educated at the time about the wonders of rescue, and also the strong need for adopters. There is so much variety in rescue, people think it is often just ‘problem dogs’ (who also shouldn’t be overlooked!) but it isn’t. Rescues often have puppies, and practically every breed of dog can be found in rescue from chihuahuas to huskies. Many friends of mine have adopted rescues who have proven to be the most loving and loyal dogs. A friend recently said to me that the best breed is ‘rescue’ and I now couldn’t agree more.

*What’s your favorite thing to do with your pet(s)?
We love walking, especially with friends. We also attend local dog shows in the summer which is great fun, and great socialization for the dogs. A friend of ours runs monthly lure-coursing events too which our boys love! Although ironically it is Theo that is excellent at chasing the lure, and Dylan just frolics after the other dogs!

*What is your favorite quote?
Just one!! I think my favorite has to be:
He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithfully and true until the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion ~ author unknown

*Favorite website to get pet information from?
I tend to post questions on Facebook pages as I find you get a variety of knowledgeable opinions and avoid getting a corporate biased answer. We like ‘Dog Friendly UK’ and ‘Lurcher Appreciation Society’.

*Do your pets (s) love to go for car rides?
Oh yes as a long walk is usually at the end of it!

*What’s your favorite animal product?

*Why do you think volunteering at an animal rescue/shelter is important?
Whether you volunteer, adopt, foster, or donate to rescue it is marvelous. To tell you a bit more about Dylan; he was found abandoned down a country lane, He was completely emaciated, covered in mange and painful sores, and staff at the shelter were amazed he even survived the night. A number of factors helped with Dylan’s recovery; a kind man named Bryan picked him at the roadside, despite how fragile he was, and took him to a shelter. Both a council run pound and rescue charity (Hounds First Sighthound Rescue) supported Dylan during the next 8 weeks; Hounds First are run purely on donations and are a non-profit organization. During this time, Dylan was placed in a volunteer foster placement where work was done to rehabilitate his physical and emotional damage. He was then adopted by us. Dylan was therefore helped by all things previously mentioned. It is not always possible to give time to volunteer but every little helps, even if it is just sharing dogs who need homes on your Facebook page

*Anything extra you would like to add?
If you would like to learn more about Dylan and Theo, and follow their daily antics, we would love you to follow our Facebook page;

Myself and a very talented artist friend, Melanie Erb, are currently writing and illustrating a children’s book. We have a potential publisher in the picture too so please follow our blog or Facebook page for more information on this as it happens. We’d love your support – some proceeds from the book will be going to rescue charity.
