*Why was it started?
A co-worker was saying at work one day that she wished someone would design a leash that held all the stuff you need when walking dog, including a cell phone. I have sewn and designed for over 40 years so I came up with a design. I also came up with the name “Pleash.” I have trademarked the name. (That’s where being an attorney helped.) Pleash is a combination of the words “pocket”and “leash.”
The Pleash works especially well in warm climates, like Charleston, SC, where people walk dogs wearing clothes without pockets. I give a little more history on my website: http://www.prettypleash.com. See the “About Us” section.
*Do you have any animals?
It’s funny, but right now I do not have dogs. I have two cats, and fostered my first litter of kittens over the Christmas holiday. At the time I first started thinking about “Pleash,” I had two dachshunds that I walked twice a day, everyday for sixteen years. They both died by the time I made my first Pleash. Dog walking with them would have been infinitely easier if I had a Pleash back then. The Pleash has a built-in
carabiner to easily clip keys on. I recommend having a spare made and “dedicating” it to the Pleash. That way you will never lock yourself out of the house, which I did at least three times. I have learned, from doing trade shows, that this is a something that happens to a lot of dog walkers at some point in time.
*What do you specialize in?
I sell the Pleash online but I also have designed a “Pleash Pocket” that I sell at shows and will add to my Etsy site soon. Pleashes can be made to a custom length if people order off the Etsy site.
*What inspires you?
I have always been creative and I am happiest when I creating whether it be painting, drawing, sewing, making jewelry, cooking– well, you get the idea.
*What do you plan to accomplish with your business in 2015?
I would like to at least double sales from 2014, which was my launch year. I launched the project in August of 2014, when the year was over halfway over. I did not get the volume of Christmas sales I had hoped for. I hope to do better in 2015.
*Do you do any charity work?
I love charity work and make that a regular part of my life. Since starting Pleash, I give regularly to rescue organizations. I am particularly supportive of non-profits that connect veterans with rescue animals or organizations that seek to reunite soldiers with their combat kanine companions.
